Op vrijdag 28 en zaterdag 29 oktober werd in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Deelnemers en bezoekers waren zeer enthousiast over het afwisselende aanbod en de uitstekende atmosfeer. Ook de catering werd geroemd. Beursambassadeur Arnold Heertje hield een vlammend pleidooi voor het verzamelen van boeken en nam zijn pet af voor specialisten-antiquaren. Een terugblik in foto's - en weer vooruit. Een bibliofiel 2012 gewenst!

NIEUWS: Boekensalon

Op vrijdag 28 en zaterdag 29 oktober wordt in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Op vrijdagmiddag organiseren NVvA en BOB een boekensalon op het Main Deck. Van 17.00 tot ongeveer 17.45 uur gaat Jos van Waterschoot in gesprek met Arnold Heertje (verzamelaar), Ton Kok (antiquaar) en Rickey Tax (conservator Museum Meermanno). Deze activiteit is, net als alle andere extra activiteiten op de beurs, gratis toegankelijk.

Het motto van het rondetafelgesprek is het beursthema Boeken in beweging. Tax vertelt over de acties voor het behoud van Museum Meermanno, Kok belicht de recente ontwikkelingen in het antiquariaat, terwijl Heertje zijn visie op verzamelen geeft tegen de achtergrond van de huidige economie.

Op vrijdag 28 en zaterdag 29 oktober wordt in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Het thema van de boekenbeurs is Boeken in beweging, verwijzend zowel naar de speciale beurstentoonstelling met beweegbare boeken als naar de huidige economische ontwikkelingen, ook in de antiquarische boekhandel.

Een bijzonder boek, dat op de beurs te koop zal zijn, is Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid. Het betreft een curieuze verzameling van 77 spotprenten, gedichten en blijspelen over de windhandel, die begon in Frankrijk en Engeland en in 1720 overwaaide naar de Nederlanden. Die handel bestond uit het omzetten van allerhande schuldbekentenissen in aandelen, waarmee vervolgens werd gespeculeerd. In het najaar van 1720 stortte de handel in en gingen vele ondernemingen en heel wat particulieren failliet.

Dit unieke exemplaar heeft achterin een handgeschreven gedicht van een onbekende tijdgenoot, die een zeer cynische maar realistische visie geeft op speculeren met gebakken lucht. De vraagprijs voor Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid is 9500 euro. Aan actualiteit heeft het boek niets ingeboet. 'Gedrukt tot waarschouwinge voor de Nakomelingen, in 't noodlottige Jaar, voor veel Zotte en Wyze. 1720', staat op de titelpagina.

Arnold Heertje, emeritus hoogleraar economie, zal de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair openen op vrijdag 28 oktober om 13.50 uur. Heertje heeft verschillende economische standaardwerken op zijn naam staan en staat bekend om zijn ongezouten mening. Hij heeft een bibliotheek van naar schatting twaalfduizend boeken en verzamelt sinds 1960 zeldzame titels op zijn vakgebied.

Speciale aandacht is er voor het Haagse Museum Meermanno. Dit oudste boekenmuseum ter wereld zal de deuren moeten sluiten als het voor 31 december niet voldoende eigen inkomsten genereert. Veilinghuis Bubb Kuyper organiseert daarom een benefietveiling van boeken en documenten die door verzamelaars aan Meermanno zijn geschonken. Twee onbekende brieven van Gerard Reve aan de President van de rechtbank te Amsterdam uit 1987, waarin Reve nauwgezet het verschil tussen een paperback en een pocket uitlegt, komen ook onder de hamer. Deze brieven en andere topstukken zijn reeds op de beurs te zien.

Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam richt op de beurs een tentoonstelling in met beweegbare boeken en pop-ups uit de collectie van de dit jaar overleden verzamelaar prof. dr. W.A. Wagenaar.

Op vrijdag 28 en zaterdag 29 oktober 2011 wordt in de PTA de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Op beide beursdagen presenteren verschillende literaire genootschappen, margedrukkers en uitgeverijen zich op het Main Deck, met uitzicht op het IJ. Het E. du Perron Genootschap en het Louis Paul Boon Genootschap eren het werk van hun lievelingsschrijver met eigen publicaties, terwijl de Vereniging Nederlandse Handboekbinderijen informeert over allerlei wijzen van boekbinden en bandversiering. Leden van het Reynaertgenootschap kunnen Tiecelijn 24, het nieuwste jaarboek, afhalen tijdens de beurs. Tijdschrift De Boekenwereld presenteert - vers van de pers - het nieuwste nummer, waarin o.a. een groot interview met Meermanno-directeur Maartje de Haan.

Uitgeverij De Buitenkant en uitgeverij Vantilt verkopen hun recente uitgaven op het gebied van boekwetenschap, cultuurgeschiedenis, typografie en grafisch design. Internetbedrijven Antiqbook en Rockingstone demonstreren de mogelijkheden van het boek in het digitale tijdperk: hoe zeldzame uitgaven binnen handbereik komen dankzij zoekmachines.

De bibliofiele uitgeverijen Avalon Pers, Ergo Pers, Statenhofpers en Uitgeverij 69 bieden op de Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair hun met loden letters gedrukte vouwbladen, plano's en boeken aan. Zo neemt Ergo Pers de tweetalige uitgave De stilte/ Die Stille van schrijver en beeldend kunstenaar Armando mee. Uitgaven van deze vier eigenzinnige uitgeverijen verschijnen altijd in een kleine, eenmalige oplage, meestal genummerd en gesigneerd door de auteur, soms voorzien van originele grafiek.

In de stand van antiquariaat Brabant presenteert en signeert John Landwehr vrijdagmiddag om 16.00 uur zijn nieuwe, rijk geïllustreerde boek met herinneringen van een verzamelaar. Ruim 20 van de 180 pagina's zijn gewijd aan beweegbare boeken. Het in een zeer kleine oplage gedrukte boek kost €29,50 en komt niet in de handel.

NIEUWS: Tentoonstelling beweegbare boeken

Ruim honderd uitgaven van de Duitse illustrator Meggendorfer zijn te vinden in de verzameling beweegbare boeken van Willem Albert Wagenaar, die onlangs is overgedragen aan de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Een prachtige doorsnee van de collectie zal op de 32e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair worden geëxposeerd. De tentoonstelling wordt ingericht door conservatoren van Bijzondere Collecties, in overleg met Lodewijk Wagenaar.

Prof. dr. W.A. Wagenaar (1941–2011) was hoogleraar psychologische functieleer en rechtspsychologie en verwierf landelijke en internationale bekendheid als getuige-deskundige in rechtszaken. Hij was ook een fervent verzamelaar van beweegbare boeken en toverlantaarns. Wagenaar overleed in mei van dit jaar.

De Duitse illustrator en uitvinder Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) vervaardigde fantasievolle boeken met trekbeelden, draaibeelden, uitklapplaten en leporello’s. In zijn bekendste uitgaven kan een ingewikkeld mechaniek binnen de boekbladen in werking worden gesteld waardoor mensen, dieren of voorwerpen gaan bewegen. De meeste van zijn 'beweegbare boeken' waren bestemd voor kinderen, maar Meggendorfer tekende ook voor volwassenen. In zijn oeuvre nemen onderwijsuitgaven een belangrijke plaats in. Uitgaven van Meggendorfer zijn zeer gezocht.

From the Amsterdam Central Station you can take the tram 26 (direction PTA).

BY FOOT
From the station it's a 15-minute walk to the PTA. Take the northern exit and turn right. Walk along the waterside and you will find the terminal on your left-hand side after crossing the bridge, next to the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.

BY CAR
Coming from Schiphol International Airport / The Hague (Den Haag):
From Schiphol take the A4 to Amsterdam and then the A10 Amsterdam ring road (north). Leave the A10 Amsterdam ring road (north) at the S114 junction (follow the signs for "Centrum, Zeeburg and Artis").
Turn left at the end of the exit road. Follow the road until you have passed through the Piet Hein Tunnel. At the end of the tunnel turn right, following the signs for "Centrum en Centraal Station". You will pass three traffic lights; after the third light turn right at the second access road.
The entrance to the parking is situated in front of the terminal.

Coming from Utrecht / Amersfoort:
On the A1 and A2 follow signs A10 Amsterdam ring road direction Zaanstad until exit number S114 (sing "Zeeburg and Artis"). Turn left at the end of the exit road. Follow the road until you have passed through the Piet Hein Tunnel. At the end of the tunnel turn right, following the signs for "Centrum en Centraal Station". You will pass three traffic lights; after the third light turn right at the second access road.

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 werd in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Antiquaren en bezoekers waren enthousiast over de tweedaagse boekenbeurs, die voor het eerst onder auspiciën van twee antiquarenverenigingen stond.

De Amsterdamse omroep AT5 deed vrijdag verslag: Darwin blijft fascineren. De expositie, ingericht door Bijzondere Collecties van de UBA, en de aanwezigheid van de spraakmakende schrijver Redmond O'Hanlon haalden bovendien een goede pers. Internist-publicist Jan Taco te Gussinklo schreef uitgebreid over de opening. Het zeldzame opdrachtexemplaar van Charles Darwin wisselde tijdens de beurs van eigenaar.

Uitgeverij Atlas neemt alle leverbare uitgaven van beursambassadeur Redmond O'Hanlon mee. De reisschrijver zet vrijdagmiddag op verzoek een handtekening. Uitgeverij De Buitenkant en uitgeverij Vantilt verkopen hun laatste uitgaven op het gebied van boekwetenschap, cultuurgeschiedenis, typografie en grafisch design. Uitgaven verschijnen altijd in een kleine, eenmalige oplage, meestal genummerd en gesigneerd door de auteur.

NIEUWS: Twintig Beenen en veertig Pensioenen

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 wordt in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Antiquariaat Schuhmacher biedt op de beurs een unieke collectie van circa 150 bandvarianten van alle drukken van Willem Elsschot aan, tot en met diens Verzameld werk uit 1957. Vanwege de documentaire waarde is deze collectie enkel als geheel te koop. Het Amsterdamse antiquariaat vult de stand tevens met los verkrijgbare eerste drukken en opdrachtexemplaren. Een topstuk is de eerste druk van Pensioen, met een handgeschreven opdracht van Elsschot aan zijn grote vriend Greshoff: 'Aan Jan Greshoff/ Antwerpen, 10 nov. 1937/ zijn verkleefde/ A. De Ridder'.

Drie verschillende omslagen van Een ontgoocheling (1921) (Schuhmacher)

Wilma Schuhmacher publiceerde deze week, na jarenlange intensieve studie, het rijk geïllustreerde Willem Elsschot in boek en band. Een eerste inventarisatie van bandvarianten. Schuhmachers grote collectie Elsschot - te zien en te koop tijdens de Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair - vormt de basis van deze publicatie. Behalve een overzicht van alle verschijningsvormen van Elsschots werk laat de inventaris tegelijk zien hoe verschillende uitgevers in de loop der jaren hun uitgaven aan de man wilden brengen.

'Een boek dat in 1941 in de etalage ligt, kan gedrukt zijn in 1932, een titelpagina uit 1938 hebben en een band uit 1941. Het heeft soms wel maanden geduurd eer ik erachter kwam hoe het zat. Natuurlijk moet je zo veel mogelijk exemplaren van een druk tot je beschikking hebben, die boeken moeten letterlijk aan je voeten liggen. Ik heb wel twintig Beenen en veertig Pensioenen,' sprak Wilma Schuhmacher onlangs tegen tijdschrift De Boekenwereld.

NIEUWS: Handgeschreven opdracht van Darwin

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 wordt in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Op beide beursdagen richt Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam een tentoonstelling in met eerste drukken, foto's en handschriften van Charles Darwin. Verscheidene beursdeelnemers tonen hun bijzondere aanwinsten op het gebied van evolutie en Darwin. Een museale vondst is een exemplaar van The effects of cross and self fertilisation in the vegetable kingdom (London 1876), met een handgeschreven opdracht van Darwin op het voorste schutblad. Antiquariaat Berger & De Vries vraagt er 27.500 euro voor.

De opdracht is gericht aan de Duitse botanicus Robert Caspary (1818-1887), die het boek op 7 november 1876 ontving. Darwin haalt Caspary enkele malen aan in zijn boek, wanneer het gaat om diens specialisme: waterlelies. Het eerste schriftelijke contact tussen beide geleerden was al in februari 1866 ontstaan, toen Darwin zijn Duitse collega om de tekst van een toespraak vroeg. Caspary had in april 1865 een lezing gegeven over het enten van planten op een internationaal congres in Amsterdam.

The Voyage of the Beagle (Asher Rare Books)

Ook andere zeldzame boeken van Darwin zijn op de beurs te koop, zoals Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty’s Ships Adventure and Beagle (London 1839). Deze eerste druk van Darwins eerste boek, aangeboden door Asher Rare Books, zou later grote bekendheid verwerven als The Voyage of the Beagle.

Ruim 70 antiquariaten bieden op 29 en 30 oktober 2010 boeken en handschriften aan over de meest uiteenlopende onderwerpen, in prijs variërend van 20 tot 200.000 euro. Behalve uit Nederland komen de beursdeelnemers uit België, Duitsland, Zwitserland en de Verenigde Staten.

NIEUWS: Tipjes van de sluier van Elsschot

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 wordt in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Op de eerste beursdag zal Vic van de Reijt, Elsschot-biograaf, om 16.00 uur enkele tipjes van de sluier oplichten. Hij vertelt over de schrijver Willem Elsschot en de zakenman Alfons De Ridder. Naar aanleiding van de nieuwe publicatie Willem Elsschot in boek en band van Wilma Schuhmacher staat Van de Reijt ook stil bij Elsschots bemoeienissen met het uiterlijk van zijn boeken. Was de schrijver bibliofiel? Deze lezing is toegankelijk voor alle beursbezoekers.

NIEUWS: Nieuwe feiten over Darwin in Leiden

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 wordt in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Op de tweede beursdag verzorgt Boudewijn Büch Gezelschap Büchmania om 14.00 uur een lezing op het Promenade Deck. Dr. Rinny E. Kooi, werkzaam bij het Institute of Biology of the University of Leiden, zal vertellen over nieuwe ontdekkingen op het gebied van Charles Darwin en Leiden. Deze lezing is toegankelijk voor alle beursbezoekers.

Kooi publiceerde in het Darwinjaar 2009 een kleine monografie Darwin in Leiden, ook al is de befaamde bioloog nooit daadwerkelijk in deze stad geweest. Wel correspondeerde Darwin met een aantal Leidse wetenschappers. Onlangs verscheen Darwin in Leiden in een Engelse vertaling, waaraan de integrale tekst van een pas opgedoken brief van Darwin is toegevoegd.

Op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 oktober 2010 wordt in de PTA te Amsterdam de 31e Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair gehouden. Bijzonder is een nieuw samenwerkingsverband tussen de Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren en de Bond van Handelaren in Oude Boeken waardoor aan de beurs bijna 70 antiquariaten uit binnen- en buitenland meedoen. Ook uitgevers en bibliofiele genootschappen zullen zich presenteren.

Darwin, de UBA en Redmond O’Hanlon

Omdat de NVvA dit jaar 75 jaar bestaat is een extra feestelijk programma opgesteld. De organisatie verwacht de beurs hierdoor bij een breed publiek onder de aandacht te kunnen brengen. Het programma is als volgt:

Redmond O’Hanlon opent de beurs vrijdag 29 oktober om 14.00 uur. O’Hanlon zelf heeft verscheidene bestsellers en reisverslagen op zijn naam, maar geniet de laatste tijd vooral bekendheid vanwege zijn prominente rol in de VPRO-serie Beagle: in het kielzog van Darwin. De serie was tot in mei 2010 elke zondag op tv en O’Hanlon was het meest uitgesproken gezicht daarvan. O’Hanlon zal het in zijn openingswoord vooral hebben over zijn voorliefde voor oude boeken in relatie tot Charles Darwin en de reis met de Beagle. Vanuit zijn functie als Ambassadeur van het Oude Boek zal O’Hanlon de hele eerste beursdag aanwezig zijn. Verzamelaars en belangstellenden kunnen hun wederzijdse fascinaties met betrekking tot Darwin en/of oude boeken bespreken.

Redmond O'Hanlon (Uitgeverij Atlas)

De afdeling Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteitsbibliotheek Amsterdam (UBA) richt op de beurs een tentoonstelling in met bijzondere Darwiniana, zoals foto’s, handschriften, de kostbare eerste druk van On the Origin of Species (1859) en de zeldzame Nederlandse vertaling (1860) van dit baanbrekende boek. Tevens te zien zijn de exemplaren van Redmond O'Hanlon, voor de gelegenheid omgedoopt tot de Redmond Copies. Het betreft hier onder andere O’Hanlon’s eigen bijzondere eerste drukken van Charles Darwin. Boeken die de reis met de Beagle overigens niet allemaal even goed doorstonden... Het onderdeel Bronnen van Darwin maakt de tentoonstelling af. Hier betreft het de gereconstrueerde bibliotheek van Darwin met de boeken die hij zelf als gezaghebbend en onmisbaar beschouwde.

Derde druk van de Nederlandse On the Origin of Species (UBA)

Als toetje van de antiquarenbeurs in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam zal Redmond O’Hanlon zaterdagavond in de Artis Bibliotheek een lezing houden over de ervaringen die hij opdeed op zijn VPRO-reis. Het eerste bezoek van Redmond O'Hanlon aan dit negentiende-eeuwse rijksmonument hebben Iris en Klaas Koppe vastgelegd op film. Beursdeelnemers, vrienden van de UBA en VPRO-medewerkers zijn voor de lezing van O'Hanlon van harte uitgenodigd.

Zowel de BOB als de NVvA brengen ter gelegenheid van de beurs in oktober een catalogus uit, waarin antiquaren hun mooiste boeken en nieuwste aanwinsten tonen. Vanzelfsprekend staan Darwin-uitgaven op de beurs centraal. Een deel van deze boeken zal ook te zien zijn op de website van de BOB en op deze website.

Tijdens de Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Fair is er een tentoonstelling van boeksimulanten: boeken die geen boeken zijn. Marianne Plasmans, de grootste verzamelaar van boeksimulanten in Nederland, begon in 1985 aan een collectie die tegenwoordig 2800 boeksimulanten telt. Op zaterdag 3 oktober 2009 om 13.00 uur, de tweede beursdag van de Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair, vindt de presentatie van het nieuwste boek van Frans Mouws plaats. Uitgeverij Les Editions Du Dodo geeft een bibliofiele editie van het boek Bouvet uit in een oplage van 100 handgebonden en door de auteur gesigneerde exemplaren.

Boudewijn Büch heeft veel geschreven over het eiland Bouvet gelegen in de zuidelijke Atlantische Oceaan (thans tot Noorwegen behorend), maar is er tot zijn eigen frustratie nooit geweest. Gerrit Jan Zwier heeft wel voet aan land gezet. Over dit bezoek en de tocht er naartoe heeft Frans Mouws hem geïnterviewd. Naar aanleiding van dit interview is Bouvet ontstaan.

Voorafgaand aan de boekpresentatie zal Gerrit Jan Zwier een interessant verhaal vertellen over het eiland Bouvet. Na de boekpresentatie is er een signeersessie met Gerrit Jan Zwier en Frans Mouws.

On Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 13.00 the presentation of the latest book by the author Frans Mouws will take place. Publisher Les Editions Du Dodo made a bibliophile edition of his book Bouvet in a run of 100 hand-bound copies signed by the author. Prior to the actual presentation Gerrit Jan Zwier will hold a lecture on the island Bouvet. Afterwards Zwier and Mouws will sign the new publication.

Boeksimulanten / Book boxes

'Wat zijn boeksimulanten? Boeksimulanten zijn voorwerpen in de vorm van een boek, maar zonder bladzijden, te gebruiken voor verschillende doeleinden. Ze zijn er in de vorm van doosjes, flessen, trommeltjes, gummen om allerlei dingen in te bewaren, te vervoeren, op te bergen en te verbergen. Gemaakt van bijna alle bestaande materialen zoals hout, papier, glas, celluloid, koper, zilver, was, en nog veel meer.

De oudste bekende boeksimulant stamt uit 709. Het was een amulet in de vorm van een boekje gevuld met plantendelen, gedragen door Bisschop Wilfrid van York om kwade geesten te verdrijven en voorspoed te brengen. Door de eeuwen heen zijn er vele bekend geworden. De meeste hiervan zijn echter verdwenen of nu te zien in musea.

Mijn oudste exemplaar is een geoxideerd koperen hangertje uit de zeventiende eeuw gevonden onder de grond. De nieuwste is van dit jaar, gewoon gekocht in een winkel.

Ik heb nu ongeveer 2800 “boeken” en “boekjes”. De kleinste is ongeveer 1 cm, de grootste 87 cm. Ik verzamel ook afbeeldingen van- en artikelen over boeksimulanten. Hoe kom je op het idee zo’n verzameling te beginnen? Ik was bibliothecaris en erfde in 1985 een aantal boeksimulanten. Om aan nieuwe aanwinsten voor mijn verzameling te komen, ga ik naar antiek, verzamel- en vlooienmarkten.' (Marianne Plasmans)

'These are objects that look like books, but are without pages in order to make them useful for many purposes. They are in the shape of boxes, bottles, tins, erasers etc. and can be used to carry, to keep safe and hide all kinds of things. They are made out of many different materials such as wood, paper, glass, celluloid, brass, silver, wax.

The oldest known “book” is from 709 A.D. It was a talisman in the shape of a book, filled with parts of plants, and carried by Bishop Wilfrid of York to chase away evil spirits and to bring him prosperity. Down the centuries a lot of them have been known. Most have disappeared but a few can be seen in museums.

My oldest example is an oxidized brass charm dating from about the 17th century. It was dug out in the Netherlands. I bought my newest item in a shop.

The collection now consists of some 2800 “books”. The largest one measures 87 cm, the smallest about 1 cm. I also collect pictures and articles about book-shaped things.

Where did I get the idea to start such a collection? My aunt, also a librarian, left me a number of “books” and, as I was already a collector, I went on collecting. I started the present “book” collection in 1985. I visit antique-, collectors- and fleemarkets and related shops.

The 29th Amsterdam Antiquarian Book, Map & Print Fair will be held in the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), right behind Amsterdam’s Central Railway Station, on the wharf of 'Het IJ'. This location is easily accessible by public transport, and there is a car park for 400 cars, with taxi and bus ranks. The coming fair will be held on October 23-25, 2008.

With 17 bookshops in the Netherlands and 9 in Belgium Boekhandel J. De Slegte B.V. may be called as the largest secondhand bookstore in the Benelux countries.

The history of "Boekhandel De Slegte" starts in 1907 when the great-grandfather of the present owner set up a lending library and a trade with used books. This trade became instantaneously a success with the pleasant consequence that within foreseeable time new bookshops were opened in other towns. The assortment was further broadened with remainders and used schoolbooks.

Except for secondhand books there are also thousands of remainders and so-called promotional books to find in every bookshop, which constantly are renewed or replenished through the year.

The bookshops in Amsterdam, The Hague and Antwerp have also at their disposal a stock with antiquarian books and prints, which occasionally are showed and offered during international bookfairs

With the daily supply of new and used books kept in mind, the adage for every reader or bibliophile can nowadays be formulated as: 'De Slegte, always worth a visit!'

We are specializing in (mainly Dutch and Flemish) literature in first and special editions, bibliophile and illustrated books, association copies and ephemera, private press editions and manuscripts, letters and literary archives. It is one of very few bookshops in the Netherlands with an extensive collection of literary manuscripts. We are also collecting literary paraphernalia (not for sale...). We are the proud possessors of a working table of Isaac Israëls and Marius Bauer, and the writing desk of Marcellus Emants. Also we have a coloured chalk drawing of a very young Gerrit Komrij.

We have a fine selection of Louis Couperus, Lodewijk van Deyssel, Gerard Reve, lots of ephemera, and hundreds of clandestine and illegal wartime editions. Hermans, in October 2010 a catalogue devoted to the works and letters of Gerard Reve, followed in June 2011 by a catalogue Hans Warren. This fair we present an illustrated catalogue Dutch and foreign literature: autographs, photographs, dedication copies and first editions. Our section Paulbooks contains first and inscribed editions, luxury bindings and oddities.

Since 1985 Max Silverenberg has officially been engaged in books. At first together with Jos Huddleston Slater. Since 1989 on his own. In his large shop he organized the first book-auctions in the southern part of Holland. At that time he was also co-organizer of the Eindhoven Bookfair. In 1991 he moved his shop to an old and lovely building on the other side of the street. A lot smaller than the former building so he specialized in the following subjects: Constantinople (books and maps), old illustrated books, art, travel, judaica, maps and prints.

In 2001, Silverenberg decided to expand with modern art and had a new gallery built. Various expositions were held with artists like Panamarenko and Tom Wesselmann. In 2003 the books and maps replaced the modern art in the gallery.

In 2011 he moved back to that nice old building next door. Leo Smiet joined the firm.

In 1976 Marc Van de Wiele rents a small shop in Prinsenhof, in Bruges. In 1977 he marries Anette. They move to the Sint-Salvatorskoorstraat, very close to the Simon Stévin square, a few years later. In 1992, they buy and renovate a historical building on the corner of the Sint-Salvatorskerkhof and the Heilige Geeststraat. Since more than thirty years Marc Van de Wiele specialises in illustrated books from the 15th till the 20th century: books of hours, incunabula, natural history, atlases, medical books and books of artists.

In 2003, Marc Van de Wiele conducts his first book auction. The illustrated catalogues are distributed in Belgium and in the world, and online.

The auction room is close to the bookshop: Groeninge 34. This neogothic building is suitable for this type of activities. The auctions are held twice a year, in March and in October.

In 2004 Nathalie Van de Wiele (degree in romance languages) came into the business.
Since october 2008 Bénédicte de Pierpont (degree in medieval history) is helping us for the catalogues' redaction.

André Swertz, Antiquarian Bookseller, was established in 1976 as (formerly) Reflex Antiquarian Bookseller & Publishing House.

It is specialized in (Dutch) literature and press books, typography, illustrated books, modern arts (avant-garde and artists' books), with an emphasis on the Dutch printer and artist Hendrik Werkman (1882-1945). A complete collection of Werkman's publications "De Blauwe Schuit", has been sold recently.

For many years Swertz is a leading antiquarian bookseller in various areas of modern arts i.a. concept, zero, minimal art, but also the Cobra movement, as well in the more typographical way, specialized in the designs and typographical surveys by Willem Sandberg (the former director of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum). I started my career in the modern book trade, where I worked for more than 18 years. During that time, I went to stay in England for four years, from 1973 until 1977. While there, I started to collect English illustrated and children’s books. I also started to trade in old and secondhand books, at a weekend Market on Hampstead Heath. When I returned to Holland (after a cycle tour through Europe), I started to work in a modern bookshop, where I took care of the antiquarian section. In 1990, the manager decided to close this section of the shop, due to economic problems. That was the beginning of self-employment. I was then 46 years old.

I am now very actively involved in buying and selling antiquarian books. I deal from home and attend all the big book fairs in Holland. For the last three years, I have also attended the book market every Friday in Amsterdam at the Spui. I issue an interesting and full catalogue about once a year.

We deal in: Children’s and Picture Books. With several small collections a.o: ABC books, a large section of 19th century children’s books, pop-up’s, boys and girls fiction and children’s magazines, modern picture books as well as old and classic ones. Bibliography on children’s books, Catchpenny pictures, illustrated books, -Dulac, Rackham, Pogany etc.- and a section on the history of education.

The shop started in 1945 in de Oude Hoogstraat nr. 3, mainly selling ordinary children’s books, novels and popular scientific books to the famous Dutch "Leesbibliotheken" (privately owned libraries with popular books). In 1951 we moved to number 4 and a few years later to a second shop at nr. 10 where the antiquarian department first started. In the early sixties my brother Rob and I joined the business of our father, and from then on we started growing.

Thirty years ago we moved to the building in which we are now (Oude Hoogstraat 14-18), a former department store, 1500 square-meters (5 floors) full of antiquarian and modern books & prints. In these past 30 years we took over the stores of Pfann and Simon Emmering, and bought many famous libraries, among them the renowned library of Prof. Wassink.

My brother left the business 4 years ago, but my wife Marga, our daughter Sascha, and our son Sander joined the business already for many years ago now.

Sascha is running the internet section, Sander is responsible for the old prints, and Marga is selling in the shop. With the help of 6 employees we are running the store, and our separately located large warehouse.

Buying we do together, all over the world. Especially in the field of classical archeology we bought many fine libraries.

We specialize in Classical Archeology, Art (before 1800),Sander Kok Architecture, Biology, Olympics, Topographical maps & prints, and we have a (very) large stock on most other fields as well.

We also intend to open an old print shop in the same street, at the Oude Hoogstraat nr. 10, in the nearby future.

For myself, Ton Kok, dealing in books became a hobby and finding books still gives me so much pleasure, that if my health permits it, I will go on for many more years to come.

* First edition of this work by Richard Simon (Dieppe 1638 - 1712) a great hebraist and scholar who entered the Oratoire at the age of 21. After having taught philosphy in Juilly he was called to Paris where he continued teaching philosophy. He was also charged with compiling a catalogue of books and oriental manuscripts of the Maison de l'Oratoire in the rue St.-Honoré; the riches collection of this kind of books in Paris. Eagerly he read everthing in this library, which later enabled him to write his numerous woks. The advertisement to this work, published posthumously, says: La Bibliomanie, ou la passion d'avoir un grand nombre de livres, est une maladie commune à bien des gens, surtout en France, où l'on voit bien une infinité de bibliothèques très nombreuses qui ne servent que d'ornement et d'apparat... and Simon here tells us which works are important enough to have in a collection to avoid having too large a collection which is only ornamental and no longer useful. He here discusses 69 works with erudition and knowledge. Simon's life was turbulent which was partly due to his unconventional ideas and his works were condemned by the authorities. The imprint is probably false (Weller, Die falschen und fingierten Druckorten, Lipsia 1864, II, p. 80) states that the book was printed in Trévoux, others say it was printed in Paris). There is also the question of authorship. In the advertisement it is stated that elle vient, au moins la meilleure partie, de M. Barat but Paul Auvrey in Richard Simon, 1638-1712 (Paris, 1974, p. 157) concludes that beaucoup de pièces soient de Simon, et il est probable qu'il en avait préparé l'édition avant de mourir. Rare, like all works by Simon.

Two works, bound together in two volumes, half green calf, spines gilt, marbled boards. All edges marbled. 1500 €
* The first work is described by Bigmore & Wyman as "Embracing, as far as possible, all the laws concerning Printing in France, from the earliest period." The second work is famous, but not properly known. It was published anonymously in 1812 (the present edition) and was republished in 1828 'considerably enlarged'. Its author is Charles Nodier as is mentioned in a contemporary hand on the titlepage of our copy. The work was highly appreciated in the nineteenth century and is still an important reference work. It deals with pastiche, plagiarism, literary hoaxes and other learned trifles. Nodier's "bibliologic bavardery" does not merely give rise to astute analyses of imitations, borrowings, stylistic processes or the author's figure. By means of a dissuasive poetics which calls upon "the attention of governments and the foresight of the law", and while invoking a public morality compelling writers to be virtuous, the facetious scholar composes a practical handbook of textual forgery.

* Vincent Placcius (1642-1699) was a prolific writer. The present work is the chief early work on books published anonymously or under pseudonym. It was published nine years after Placcius's death and identifies 2777 anonymous works. The engraved frontispiece shows how the learned author or editor, standing in an academic library, takes the masks from the faces of several authors and attaches them to a cord. The cord with the masks refers to "Zettelkasten" to which single slips of paper with textual quotations could be flexibly attached, facilitating sorting and storing of text. A very good copy. [cf. Petzholdt p. 102]

* According to Baudrier Laurent Hyllaire is mentioned as working in Lyon in 1506 and there is another mention of him in 1530 witnessing a marriage. In ink on the first page is the date 1498 but the book is in fact from 1517. Juvenal, whose full name was Decimus Junius Juvenalis, was a satirical poet active in Imperial Rome in the 2nd and 3rd decades of the 2nd century. Juvenal, today, is most well-known for his 16 Satires (which were, already in ancient times, arranged into five books). These satires (Saturae) are sharp attacks on the vices and misdeeds of Roman society. [Baudrier Vol. II, p. 68]

Frits Knuf Antiquarian Books was founded in Amsterdam in the 1950’s. When Frits Knuf retired in 1996, we took over the business and in 2001 we moved to France. We live in Vendôme, a charming small historic town in the Loire Valley, 180 km southwest of Paris (and only 42 minutes by TGV from Paris-Montparnasse).

We offer a wide range of books about books and our stock holds over 25,000 titles. You can find books about typography and printing history, bookbinding, paper, libraries, book illustration, incunabula and manuscripts as well as booksellers’ and auction catalogues.
The last few years we have focused on old and rare books in this field, and we hold a good stock of antiquarian bibliography, typespecimens and printers’ manuals and auction and booksellers’ catalogues from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, as well as rare books on various subjects, with the emphasis on architecture and art.

We attend several bookfairs (Paris, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt) and look forward to meeting you there. Even though the internet cannot be ignored, we think that when it comes to collecting rare books, personal contact between booksellers and customers remains the best way of building a collection. We would like to show you our books in person and discuss them with you, either at a bookfair, or in Vendôme where you can have a look at the whole of our stock as well as enjoying a visit of Vendôme, Ville d’Art et Histoire, and if you have some more time, the Loire Valley with its famous chateaux.

Ronald Jansen was not his whole life a print-seller. For many years he a.o. worked as head of the department of detective force at the Ministry of State for Home Affairs in The Hague. A colleague in The Hague brought him there into contact with graphic art. In that kind of art he found his vocation. Next his work started he in 1978 with selling prints at Antique & Art Fairs. In 1996 he tendered his resignation and started full time as print-seller, specializing in prints after 1840.

In the meantime he had found a fine location to sell his prints: the fort Ossenmarkt in Weesp. This fort is built in 1860 to defend Amsterdam, especially against the French army. It is one of the 40 fortifications around Amsterdam, which are called “De stelling van Amsterdam”, and are in 1996 placed on the World Estatelist of the UNESCO.

The fort is very massive, with 2 meter thick walls, however the interior, full of curves, immediately gives the visitor a warm, good, and safe feeling.

B.M. Israel Boekhandel en antiquariaat BV was founded towards the end of the 19th century in Arnhem. After World War II the business moved to Amsterdam where various addresses were occupied (Herengracht, Max Israel (January 21st, 1916 - October 12th, 2001)Leidsestraat, Johannes Verhulststraat, Singel 379) before settling down for a period of nearly 33 years at 264 Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in 1971, close to Dam square. This large 17th century house originally stood overlooking the canal which was navigated by tradesmen who mainly dealt in wood and timber (up to 1600), later on a flower market emerged. About 1740 the house was extensively renovated and redecorated on request of the owners, the family van Hemert-Schricks. The sculptors Van Logteren (father and son) designed and crafted the doors and panel work which can still be admired today. The canal stopped being a canal in 1884. The house was bought by the Hendrick de Keyser Foundation in 1929 and restored in 1930.

From 1950 onwards Max Israel (who died October 12, 2001) ran the business with the help of a large number of employees. The last 25 years a small group of dedicated employees formed the core of the business: Jaap Nieuwpoort, Wil Walison and Simon Blok. The former retired many years ago, Wil and Simon are responsible for the books and prints up to this moment. After appr. 14 years with the business Simon Blok became director in January 2001 last. Wil Walison is responsible for the bookkeeping and runs the printroom on Singel 379.

Six months before the death of Max Israel it became obvious that the internal renovation / redecoration of Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 264 could no longer be postponed. The rent was terminated and a 2 year period was granted to clear the house. Max was adamant that the business should be continued, but of course could not foresee that he would not be there anymore to make decisions. By the end of 2003, after an incredible amount of work, we succeeded in relocating the business to the small village of Egmond aan den Hoef, some 25 minutes north of Amsterdam, easily reached by train or car. The building is decidedly modern, the books remain antiquarian.

Thus a new phase has started in the long history of B.M. Israel Boekhandel en Antiquariaat BV. Visitors are always welcome, but please call in advance.

After its foundation at Utrecht in 1970 by Sebastiaan Hesselink, now an internationally recognized expert in the world of rare books, manuscripts & prints, Antiquariaat FORUM soon found place as a widely accepted member of the antiquarian book trade.

A move, in 1994, away from Utrecht to the charming, quiet hamlet of 't Goy, some 17 km beyond the city, yet within easy reach Sebastiaan Hesselink and his son Laurens by rail or road, has given our team of expert enthusiasts space to produce our catalogues, and make preparations for the many book fairs in which we participate. We are in the midst of orchards, cattle and at a stone's throw from the Langbroeker Wetering, the heart of an area replete with medieval castles with their forests and their gardens. So we have the peace and quiet to work and attend to our appointed visitors.

In 2000 Sebastiaan Hesselink was joined by his eldest son Laurens who, following four years as a cowboy (jackaroo) in Australia and with three years experience in the new book business, decided to join the family's rare book concern. We are confident that over 35 years experience in combination with youthful energy and enthusiasm provides the basis of a good, strong and long term customer relationship.

We carry general stock in old and rare books, with special emphasis on the subjects of Travel, Natural History, Art and Architecture, Children's Books, Bindings, Coloured Plate Books, Emblem Books, Gastronomy, Medicine, Music, Science, 16th Century, Incunables, and Illuminated Manuscripts. Asher & Co. B.V. was founded in 1830 in Berlin by Adolph Asher, among other things bookseller to Alexander von Humboldt, Darwin, and other eminent nineteenth-century scientists. In 1933 the company was forced to leave Berlin and relocated in Amsterdam. From 1946 onwards the company has issued numerous catalogues in the fields of natural history, science and travel and voyages. After the retirement of Nico Israel in 1995, the company moved to its present location in IJmuiden, about twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, where it now operates under the name of ASHER Rare Books.

From January 2010 on we have decided to join forces with our esteemed colleague Antiquariaat Forum of ’t Goy (Houten- Utrecht). The firm’s daily management is now in the hands of Julius Steiner in cooperation with Laurens R. Hesselink.

In April 1986, together with two other students, Iris van Daalen started to sell secondhand books from a booth along the Utrecht’s Old Canal. Business was surprisingly good, and when a particularly cold Autumn came, it was decided to hire a store, which was named Antiquariaat Aleph. The next years they worked hard and had a lot of fun.

Iris M. van Daalen read History of Art at the University of Utrecht. After graduating in Medieval Architecture, she opened her own shop, Acanthus, at the Old Canal, in 1990. The beginning was sometimes difficult, but none the less the quality of the stock could be upgraded every year.

In 1994, Acanthus moved to a 17thcentury house, with cellars dating back from the 12th century, a national monument behind Utrecht´s cathedral, and surrounded by churches. The beautifully decorated chimneys and exiting inventory create an atmosphere of beauty and adventure.

After 17 years, Acanthus has become an internationally active business, specialized in illustrated books, travel, natural history, children’s books and ephemera. In addition, it maintains a fine inventory of popular prints, catchpenny prints, and paper toys. On a less regular basis one can also find books on art, architecture, science, printing techniques, photography & related, mathematics, optics, music, chess, horsemanship, books in fine bindings and so on ... in short everything that we find interesting, beautiful, remarkable or even weird.

As long as Iris' 3 children are small (the youngest is 7 years old) we will only participate in a small number of international bookfairs. Dieter Schierenberg B.V. was established in 1974 and was formerly a part of Antiquariaat Junk and Elsevier publishers. Since 1984 we operate under the name above and specialize in rare, out of print and illustrated Natural History books & Periodicals including the following subjects: Earth Sciences, Travel, Scientific Explorations, Physical geography, Anthropology, Science and the History of Science.

We hold one of the largest stocks on these subjects on the European continent and have a big experience covered by several generations of Schierenberg’s in the antiquarian booktrade.

Jeroen Schierenberg (third generation) has become director of the firm in 2007. Former director and father, Dieter Schierenberg has decided to spend most of his time painting in southern France, which has always been his great passion. He remains active as an advisor and partner for certain bookfairs.

We have a small dedicated staff of people that work with us, of which Arjen Stada has been with us the longest and is the only full-time employee.

Although we do not run an open shop, we welcome visitors any time by appointment. Wantlists for books and/or periodicals will be dealt with promptly and catalogues are available on demand.

150 x 105mm. 178 + i leaves, two columns of 34 lines in brown ink in a small gothic bookhand between 4 verticals and 35 horizontals ruled in plummet, justification: 101 x 26-6-29mm, rubrics in red chapter numbers and running headings in letters alternately red and blue, each chapter opening with a red or blue initial in the margin 3-lines high and with flourishing of both colours the height of the page, TWENTY ILLUMINATED INITIALS open the Prologues and TWENTY-EIGHT HISTORIATED INITIALS in pink, blue, red, silver and gold open the biblical books. French 19th-century red straight-grained morocco gilt with gilt edges.
The combination of extensively flourished chapter initials and illuminated initials, both foliate and historiated, enhanced with burnished silver and gold make this an exceptionally decorative and attractive New Testament. Many of the initials include small dragons or winged lions and each Biblical book opens with a finely executed initial in a style similar to that associated by Branner with the Soissons atelier, a shop that seemed to concentrate on Bible illustration: R. Branner, Manuscript Painting in Paris in the time of Saint Louis (1977), pp.77-78 & 216-217. It may originally have been intended as part of a one-volume Bible but it has clearly been independently bound since at least the 17th century.

Two engraved allegorical frontispieces, 6 engraved pictorial titles, 4 engraved titles, 519 maps and plates mounted on guards, most double-page, some folding, full-page or within text, all coloured throughout in a contemporary hand, with frontispieces heightened in gold. Contemporary Dutch red morocco gilt, covers with double fillet border, triple fillet panels with floral corner-pieces, spines in eleven compartments with raised bands and repeated floral ornament.
A DE LUXE COPY of the Spanish edition of the ATLAS MAYOR, in contemporary red morocco with exceptionally fine contemporary colouring. The Atlas Mayor (the Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior) is the rarest edition of what De la Fontaine Verwey called "the greatest and finest atlas ever published". Van der Krogt locates only four institutional copies, printed in 1672 or earlier, with at least this degree of completeness.

Sanderus Antiquariaat, named after the famous Flemish historian, Antonius Sanderus, was founded in 1980 by Filip Devroe. The company was first settled in Kortrijk but moved in 1993 to Ghent.

In 2002, Brecht Devroe, the elder son, opened a new gallery in the centre of Brussels. Dieter Devroe, the younger who made a thesis on "Cartouches on maps in the 16th and 17th centuries", joined the business in 2003.

We are specialised in antiquarian books, maps and prints, but our website focuses on maps of all parts of the world, from the 15th to the 18th century.

AMSTERDAM - Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten - Collection of about 95 ( 58 signed) original drawings, engravings, etchings and a few watercolours by artists and pupils of the Rijksakademie at the end of the 19th century, various sizes.
A very rich collection from the estate of Rudolf Stang (1831 – 1927). He has been Professor for the art of engraving and etching at the Rijksakademie from 1884 till 1901.
Among the names are H.W.Bogtman, Joh.Jan Damme, Elsa van Doesburgh, Wilh.Petrus van Geldorp, Jac. Fr. de Jong, Nico Wilh. Jungmann, Henri Koetser, Hubert Marie Huib Luns, R.van Leeuween, Martin Monnickendam, Joh. Graadt van Roggen, Georg Rueter, Hobbe Smith, Louis van der Tonge, Jan Zoetelief Tromp, Henriette Estella de Vries, J.C. Wylacker and others.
Added is a „Blijk van hulde door zijn leerlingen den hoogleeraar R.Stang aangeboden. Amsterdam 4.December 1902“, an original drawing by H.W.N.Volmar with 57 handwritten original signatures by different artists. Sold as a collection.

Founded in 1953 by Gerta and Johann Hubert „Hanno“ Schreyer. We specialise in decorative prints, old maps and views from all over the world. We participate in two Map Fairs : London in June and Paris in November and for 47 years in the Stuttgart Book Fair in January. In 1968 I started my antiquarian education during the 3rd International Book Fair in Amsterdam, which was held at „Arti et Amicitiae“ on the Rokin. There was a very special program for young antiquarian booksellers from all over the world organized by Menno Hertzberger, the father of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.

About the ILAB

The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers is an organisation that encompasses national associations of antiquarian booksellers around the world. It speaks for twenty nations and two thousand leading booksellers. Its sign stands for the integrity and professionalism of the trade worldwide.

Beginnings
The League (or ILAB, as it is often known among English-speakers; LILA among French) was founded in Amsterdam at a meeting of major European booksellers in 1947. It was born of the spirit of international co-operation and fuelled by the determination to sweep away national differences that inspired the postwar world. Since that time its aims, objects and ideals have been adopted across the continents, and the ILAB network now extends into America, Asia and the Southern Hemisphere.

Objects
The objects formulated in 1947 are still little changed. Put briefly, they are to uphold and improve professional standards in the trade, to promote honorable conduct in business, and to contribute in various ways to a broader appreciation of the history and art of the book.

Customs & Usage
The League publishes, and upholds, a code of practice based on the wide experience of all its affiliated nations. It is binding on all its members. It is a mark of the success of this code that disputes are rare. If disputes should arise then the League mediates and its authority ensures that judgments are implemented.

ILAB Book Fairs
The League has long supported and been associated with antiquarian book fairs, the remarkable movement for the display and marketing of books that has developed since the Second World War. Its biennial Congresses, always staged in a different city, provide the occasion for the grandest fairs in the world, fairs distinguished for the eminence of exhibitors and for the quantity and quality of exhibits. These fairs are organised in accordance with the League's guidelines, which guarantee the authenticity of materials and integrity of the booksellers.

ILAB Bibliographical Prize
The support of scholarship and research into the history of the book is an important part of the League's work. Its US$ 10,000 Bibliographical Prize is awarded to publications of outstanding merit in the field. A distinguished panel of judges drawn from the academic and bookselling professions adjudicates on entries submitted from all over the world.

Current publications of the League are obtainable from members, or from the offices of the affiliated national associations.

Affiliated Associations
There are twenty national associations of antiquarian booksellers that together constitute the League. Most have brochures or lists of members available on request.

This compendium of customs and usage of the profession of antiquarian bookseller defines the usages generally and universally recognised in all commercial transactions relating to the profession, either between professionals, or between professionals and institutions or individuals. Antiquarian bookselling in this context includes manuscripts, autograph letters, prints, maps and drawings, as well as books.

Code of ethics
Members of the national associations affiliated with the I.L.A.B. (hereafter, for the sake of brevity, referred to as 'members') should conduct all commercial transactions according to these usages which expressly indicate that members offer to their clients a clearly defined code of practice based on high ethical standards.

Description and disclosure
Members shall be responsible for the accurate identification and description of all material offered for sale. All defects, significant restorations and sophistications should be clearly noted and made known to those to whom the material is offered or sold. Unless the parties agree otherwise, a full cash refund shall be available to the purchaser of any misrepresented material.

Technical terms
Members should, as professionals, be conversant with and responsible for the correct use and interpretation of the technical terms of the trade.

Price
Members shall be responsible for the accurate and professional pricing of all material offered for sale, regardless of whether they are dealing with experts or amateurs.

Authenticity
Members shall vouch for and make every reasonable effort to substantiate the authenticity of all materials offered for sale. Should it be determined that such material is not authentic or is questionable, then it shall be returnable for a full cash refund, or on some other mutually agreed terms. Material shown to be not authentic, or of disputed or undetermined nature, shall not again be offered for sale unless all facts concerning it are clearly disclosed.

Stolen property
Members shall be responsible for passing to the buyer clear title to all material sold, and shall not knowingly purchase, hold or attempt to re-sell stolen material. They shall make all reasonable efforts to ensure that materials offered to them are the property of the seller. They shall make every effort to prevent the theft of antiquarian books and related materials. They shall cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities to recover and return stolen material, and to apprehend those responsible.

Damage in transit
Responsibility for damage in transit shall rest with the sender. Members should attend to be careful and appropriate handling, packing, posting and shipping of material to ensure that it reaches the buyer in the same condition as when purchased.

Terms and conditions
It should be understood that books are normally offered for sale in catalogues at the prices affixed, subject to prior sale, and that payment is either due in advance, or, when satisfactory credit has been established, promptly on receipt of the goods. In the case of special offers, courtesy requires that an option to purchase be assured for a certain time which should be specified. Any divergence from these generally accepted terms should be expressly stated.

Bank charges
The supplier must be paid the full amount of his invoice; the buyer is responsible for all clearing and bank charges relating to the transaction.

Tenders
When a bookseller makes an offer to purchase books the price should be valid either for an immediate transaction or for a stated period of option.

Clear pricing
Members should ensure that all material offered for sale in an open shop or at book fairs is clearly marked with the selling price. Material not for sale or being processed or reserved, should be appropriately segregated.

Trade discount
Members should permit any other member of an association affiliated and in good standing with the ILAB to buy from their stock any material offered for sale (i.e. priced) and should extend to such buyers the customary and reciprocal trade discount of at least 10%.

On approval: term
Consignments 'on approval' requested by a prospective buyer must be supplied with a clear indication of the term allowed for a decision. When this term elapses the sale shall be deemed to be concluded if the goods have not been returned. If returned, postal charges both ways shall be borne by the prospective buyer.

On approval: responsibility
Members who ask for material 'on approval' or 'on consignment' shall hold themselves responsible for such material from its arrival until returned or fully paid for. However, this responsibility does not extend to damage and loss due to war or to any risk which cannot be covered by insurance.

Multiple orders
If a multiple order cannot be filled in its entirity owing to part of it having been previously sold, this does not constitute grounds for the cancellation of that order unless so stipulated on the order.

Valuations and appraisals
Valuations must be carried out scrupulously in the spirit of these usages and customs. They involve the moral responsibility of the bookseller towards the owner of the material.

Valuations: Tax Law
Members offering valuation or appraisal services shall be responsible for being conversant with the relevant regulations as stipulated by local tax laws. They shall conduct such appraisals in strict compliance with these regulations.

Auction commissions
Members who receive from a client instructions to purchase at a public auction sale should also accept responsibility for the careful inspection of the material to be bought and should not solely rely on information supplied by the seller or by the auctioneer. He or she should, of course, also exercise the utmost discretion and eliminate any risk of conflict of interest.

Bookseller's premises
Members should never approach or solicit customers in another member's shop, book fair booth, or place of business without the introduction or consent of the proprietor.

Interpretation
This compendium of usages and customs has been set out in English and French. If any dispute should arise as to the interpretation of a paragraph from one language to the other, the Committee of the ILAB shall decide which is the correct interpretation.

Bernard Shapero first entered the antiquarian book business over 20 years ago as a very young man. In 1979 he opened a stand in Gray's Antique Market, near Bond Street. By 1986 the business had expanded so much that a larger premises was required and in June of that year Bernard moved to a large shop in Holland Park Avenue, west London. He also became the youngest member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association. Three years later a Print Gallery was opened in the basement.

In 1996 Bernard Shapero with his new partner Tommaso Zanzotto purchased an impressive five-floor house, 32 Saint George Street, Mayfair.

The antiquarian books are now located on four floors whilst Shapero Gallery is located a few minutes walk away at 24 Bruton Street where a superb selection of decorative prints, maps and nineteenth century photographs are housed, and where regular exhibitions are held.

Bernard Shapero and his expert staff provide knowledgeable guidance and valuations for seasoned collectors and novices alike, working closely with them both in tracking down elusive books and advising on building collections.

Antiquarian Bookshop Isis, founded in 1984, is located in the historical centre of Groningen. Isis specialises in philosophy and old & rare books. In addition we sell books on literature, history, religion, and art, thus reflecting the learned tradition of a region that produced humanist scholars like Rudolphus Agricola, and stimulated the foundation of Groningen University in 1614.

Isis is staffed by three academically trained historians whose fields of expertise range from modern philosophy and social history to medieval studies. Together they produce sales catalogues of philosophical books (twice a year) and old & rare books (once a year) which are sent to hundreds of customers.

Iris Antique Globes and Maps originated from the Conservation Studio of Paul Peters, for paper, vellum and parchment, leather, books, prints, graphics… and globes and maps. Paul is a master paper and globe restorer. His fascination of antique globes and cartography in general prompted him to buy globes, and later also to sell them to other antique globe lovers and collectors.

One of the most popular of modern collectibles is the globe, because of its variation in size and attractive appearance, usually mounted in a finely crafted wooden stand. Globes are also functional, for those from the nineteenth century contain most of the known geographical features and all the prominent star positions.

Because we believe that the collector of globes, which have always been of great educational value, would benefit from and enjoy some information on both the history and the makers of globes, we have created two new web pages on our site – Globe History and Globe Makers.

From our showroom we sell historically important and decorative globes and similar instruments to collectors, universities, museums and other institutions worldwide, as well as international companies. Weare always interested in purchasing new material, whether a single item or a complete set or collection.

Our collection of globes contains items from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th centuries and can be rated as one of the largest and finest in the world.
